Protecting Your Property During Summer Storms

Two tips for property owners who need to have extremely large trees removed

by Bobbie Miles

If you have an extremely large (in regards to either its girth or height) tree on your property and you plan to get a tree removal company to fell it, you might be interested in this advice.

1. Don't expect the entire tree to be removed in one day

First and foremost, even if in the past, the arborists you've hired to remove trees for you have been able to complete their work in less than a day, you must not make assumptions about how long it will take to fell this tree before you have talked to the tree removals company and have given them a chance to evaluate the tree in person.

While arborists can often remove a medium-sized tree in a day, it can take them considerably longer to remove a much larger one. They need to do a particularly thorough risk assessment beforehand (as very big trees are more hazardous to remove than smaller ones) and will not be able to remove it by simply making a notch and slicing through its trunk with a chainsaw (as they can often do with medium-sized trees).

Instead, they will probably have to cut it down, bit by bit, starting at the top and making their way to the bottom of the trunk. Then, when they've felled most of the tree, they will have to remove its stump and the root system. Again, this will take longer than usual, as a tree that has grown to a considerable size will usually have an extremely wide root network. Lastly, it might take multiple trips for them to take the felled tree away, as only one or two sections of it will fit on the back of their truck at once.

2. Make changes to your property that will allow for the easy removal of your felled tree

Depending on the layout of your property, you might need to make a few changes to ensure that the arborists can easily take away the tree that they fell for you. If the tree has an exceptionally wide trunk, you might need to move certain structures out of the way so that the tree removal team can carry the tree trunk out to their truck.

For example, if your garden shed is likely to prevent the arborists from lugging sections of the trunk through your garden, then it might be a good idea to move this shed (or to even dismantle it for a couple of days). If you don't do this, the arborists might have to spend extra time slicing the trunk into thirds or quarters so that it fits past the obstacles in your garden. You might then have to pay a bit more for their service.
