Protecting Your Property During Summer Storms

Summer storms in Australia bring with them violent winds and rain, and during this volatile weather, property is quickly damaged when parts of a tree become flying debris. It is important that homeowners know how to stop their trees from becoming a flying projectile and that is where our tree service company comes to the rescue. Tree branch trimming and dead tree removal are just two services provided which take away the hazardous parts of a tree. While tree retention and restoration to full health is always the best outcome, sometimes tree removal means that the chance of a rogue tree landing on your home is greatly reduced. Our website gives further information about the services available.

A Lizard-Friendly Paradise: 7 Things Your Garden Needs to Attract Lizards

by Bobbie Miles

Are you thinking of redesigning your garden so you can attract more lizards? If so, you'd be helping to save Australia's declining lizard population. Since 1993, the number of lizards threatened with extinction has doubled in Australia. Fortunately, by adding the following 7 plants and features to your garden, you can help to provide a lizard-friendly habitat.

A Pond

Lizards need a regular supply of water to survive. You could place bowls of water around your garden, but a pond would be much more attractive — not to mention practical. Make sure you place plenty of rocks and plants in and around your pond to attract insects and create a bridge for lizards to go to and from the water. Bullrush and soft rush are good for this purpose.

Hiding Places

Place pipes, logs and stick and brick piles around your garden too. Lizards need places where they can hide from predators. These places will also attract insects that will serve as food.

Basking Spots

Lizards also need places where they can bask in the sun since they are cold-blooded. Place rocks strategically around your garden next to bushes and long grasses, so lizards can escape predators if necessary.

Lizard-Friendly Plants

Many species of Australian plant provide lizards with a safe habitat. Plant groundcover plants, such as creeping boobialla and weeping grass, for lizards to hide in. And don't forget to provide incoming lizards with plants that produce berries and seeds, like the strawberry plant.

Mulch

Lizards will use the mulch around your plants as cover when hunting and resting. Mulch also brings insects, since insects often lay their eggs in mulch. Use woody mulch around your plants to give lizards somewhere to hide and feed in peace.

Insect-Bringing Plants

To attract insects to your garden for the lizards to eat, you need nectar-producing plants like the bottlebrush plant, which is popular with flies and insects. Native violets and grevilleas are also good choices as they both produce nectar and they are beautiful plants.

Ground Litter

Lizards need a garden with plenty of ground litter. Ground litter serves two purposes. First, ground litter, such as fallen leaves, twigs and stems, gives insects somewhere to breed and lay their eggs. In turn, lizards will feed on those insects. Moreover, lizards can hide from birds and other predators among ground litter.

If you are looking to create a lizard-friendly oasis in your garden, you'll need Australian native plants. Visit your local wholesale nursery and choose from the Australian native plants that they have to offer.
